What is it?

The Iliotibial Band (ITB) is a key piece of structural equipment in the lower body. A thick band running from the outside of your hip to just below the outer knee, it connects the hip to the knee and provides vital stability during activities like walking and running.

When part of the ITB (usually closer to the knee) becomes inflamed and irritated due to sub-optimal loading of the knee joint, it can cause friction between the ITB and the femur.

Symptoms of ITB friction

  • Symptoms localised to the outer side of the knee – can range from an achiness to a sharp pain
  • Pain when running or walking, especially up and downhill
  • Symptoms often worsen with increased activity
  • Occasionally swelling on the outside of the knee

ITB friction treatment & prevention

Physiotherapy treatment is initially based around reducing inflammation and irritation around the knee joint. This can be done through anti-inflammatories, icing and elevation of the area, along with relative rest from aggravating activities.

Once the initial irritation has settled, our focus is on fixing the loading pattern at the knee that caused the problem in the first place. This would include addressing muscle tightness and weakness through physiotherapy, as well as tweaking running and exercise technique.
